  3. BOOM

“The actions of socially conservative lawmakers across the country have painted a pretty retro picture of what they expect and demand of women. They don’t want us to have abortions, but they also don’t want us to have sex education that teaches us that having sex can lead to pregnancy. They don’t want us to take birth control, but they also don’t want us to use emergency contraception. They don’t want us to have children outside of marriage. So they must want us to be virgins until we get married to a husband who we allow to impregnate us constantly. Vaginal sex has become a dangerous undertaking.” — Erin Gloria Ryan

    Amen.

  11. Ridiculousness

So, the last couple days have been pretty ridiculous haha.

first: In an hours time 8am-9am, I sat in a toilet because someone left the seat up, then fell up some stairs outside of the snooty business school and people scoffed at me, then I was in a classroom with seats like Hartung 101 and forgot the seat flipped up and fell on my ass while everyone watched. I still have the bruises to prove all of these falls or fails whatever.

second: I was walking to my car from class (which takes about 10-15 minutes) and all the sudden I notice this high pitched noise. I think of all the possibilities like flooding warning, tornado warning, practice test, the world is exploding, I am in an alternate universe, or my ears are ringing. You know the usual. However, I came to the conclusion my ears were just ringing….turns out I was just waltzing down the street with a metal umbrella during a TORNADO SIREN!! like duck and cover you’re gonna die type siren…in JANUARY! wtf. So, I go home and start cooking lunch feeling thankful I had escaped death for the day.

third: I’m still cooking previously mention lunch. I am making cheddar garlic biscuits and chicken finger things. To cook biscuits you have to turn the heat way up to like 450-500. Little did I know, my roommate cooked last night, accidentally spilled a bunch of chicken grease and other junk onto the bottom of the stove. So, I start seeing all of this smoke, open the oven and SHIIITTT!! SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT!! ITS ON FIRE! My fucking oven was on fire!! I dont know if its a grease fire or what. NO ONE BELIEVED ME IT WAS ON FIRE, no one. By the time we all agree “shit its on fire”, it’s really really flaming. I find the complexes fire extinguisher outside and it says pull only in case of fiiiree, all alarms will sound…welll shit. We end up putting it out with water…smokey escapes…we get him back…crisis averted. (Bought my own extinguisher that night, along with oven cleaner.)

    Basically wtf happened haha.

and I just drove 4 hours so my CAT can get his stitches removed, even though he already ripped them out. Apparently they still have to look at the scar, and they won’t accept a picture via text message. Doesn’t my phone send HD video?? Isn’t HD basically the same as real life???

Also Aaron and I (mostly me) can’t stop doing the hand fart noise (like on How I Met Your Mother) during almost everything….and we are addicted to rice crispy treats….I’ve made 4 batches in a week

Ok one more random thought…I never realized how weird it is to not see stars until I get to a place that isn’t a city and I get to see stars. Going to my favorite Anderson road tomorrow night with babes to star gaze.

  13. The pictures are just a sampling of my div friends and our nights together.  The first picture goes Ruifun, Priscila, Laura, Me, Angela, Melissa.  The Second is Priscila and her husband Justin (our best couple friends here), Then Priscila and Angela. and of course wise Mike.

Sooooo I haven’t blogged in a really really long time.  A lot has happened since then.  This will be sporadic.

My sister announced she was pregnant.  She is due in April!!  She decided not to find out what the baby will be because her husband is in afghanistan and wouldn’t get to find out at the same time.  He should be back in time for the birth so no worries.  I am excited to be an aunt for the first time. anyway moving on…

Last time I blogged I talked a lot about missing everyone back home because I hadn’t found anyone here that I considered a close friend.  Luckily that has changed too, not the missing people from Anderson part but the other.  I am extremely thankful for the group of girls I met in div school.  They really do make everything worth while.  Anyone, who has ever traveled or moved away from everyone they love understands what I mean by loneliness.  I can be surrounded by people and still feel alone because I am missing all of the people I created a community and a narrative with.  I am so happy to have people in my life that I can make new memories with, I love them and they love me, and we can share ourselves with each other.  I have been having a lot of fun and I want everyone to come visit me!  I only survived the semester thanks to my div school girls and thanks to everyone back in anderson who supports me.

After a semester of adjusting to life as a grad student with two jobs, a long distance boyfriend, and new relationships, finals happened.  They were stressful and crazy and all went fine.  I got decent grades, but I am glad that semester ended.  I forgot how awful required courses can be to take.  You have no motivation, no interest in the subject, and too much work to get done.  I am infinitely more excited about this semester for so many reasons, including my class schedule.

After finals I went home for 3 weeks and slept on my parents couch.  I am always so excited to go home and see my family until I remember all we do is yell at each other.  However, once I get over the initial shock of our family dynamics, I remember why I love them.  We truly care about each other regardless of how we show it. Christmas was great, New years eve was even better!  But I was excited to go back to Nashville because Aaron was moving in!!

We have really only lived together for about 2 weeks and already it seems to fit.  I am really busy Sunday-Thursday but we still get to hang out and fall asleep together.  I never realized how amazing living with a partner could be!  I was really nervous at first because of our different sleeping schedules, cleaning styles, and that fact that he doesn’t like cats.  Luckily we have really worked together and made compromises and divided up labor amongst the two of us.  He cleans (he thinks I suck at it),  I wash laundry, we fold and put it away,  I cook, he cooks (heats stuff up), we do dishes, we take care of the cats (yes he likes the cats now),  we watch friends and cuddle.  Life is good.  One of the books I read last semester suggested that mundane decisions such as who controls the remote, or does the dishes were actually theologically based decisions.  I haven’t quite explored that fully, but I think we are doing a good job of making them.  This has gone on too long.

Spring semester just started and the reading list looks way better than last semester.  The first too books I got to read were Kierkegaard and Freud, so its going to be awesome.  I am taking four classes

Hope & Despair — we read a lot of Kierkegaard in this class and its taught by a clinical pastoral counselor, meaning that he is amazing…reminds me of Barlow.

Personality Theory — I took this class with Dr. Farmen at AU, but obviously when it is taught by a 76 year old white guy you’re going to get different perspectives if you take it from a 40 something woman.  I am excited about this class mostly because it is with my advisor and it will be awesome.

History of Religion in America — I usually hate history classes but this one is interesting because of the subject matter and the fact that professor seems to love what he does.  Unfortunately, he thinks my name is Julian.

Romans — This class is taught by an older than dirt French man who as prof was a reader for Burnett’s dissertation.  He is really interesting.  His parents harbored jews in the holocaust, he participated in integral parts of the civil rights movement, and he served on some committee that helped decided what to do with post apartheid south africa.  (ya he met/knows Nelson Mandela)  He actually changed his entire ideology and methodology regarding scholarship after 30 years, based on a conversation he had with Nelson Mandela.  He’s awesome and also thinks my name is Julian.

Ok byez (sorry for not proofreading)
